In a bid to crackdown on illicit drug activities, a Grade 1 Area Court in Kabusa, Abuja, has handed down a two-month imprisonment sentence to Mustapha Adamu and Mohammed Musa for their involvement in drug peddling.
The presiding Judge, Malam Abubakar Sadiq, delivered the verdict after the two offenders, residents of New Kuchingoro, Abuja, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.
Despite the severity of their crime, Judge Sadiq offered the convicts an alternative to imprisonment by giving them the option to pay a fine of N15,000 each.
Accompanying Adamu and Musa were three other individuals, Philip Ibrahim, Jabra Ahmed, and Kabiru Ali, who were also implicated in the case. However, these three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.
In response to their plea, Judge Sadiq granted bail to Ibrahim, Ahmed, and Ali, setting their bail bond at N20,000 each along with one surety per defendant.
According to the prosecution, Mrs. C.C. Okafor, all five individuals were apprehended by law enforcement officers in a suspected criminal enclave in Kuchingoro on February 13. The arrests were made in connection to the unlawful sale of narcotics within the vicinity.
The prosecutor emphasized that the actions of the convicts and defendants were in violation of Section 183 of the Penal Code, which addresses offenses related to drug trafficking and distribution.
The sentencing of Adamu and Musa serves as a warning to individuals involved in illicit drug activities, reaffirming the commitment of the judiciary to combatting drug-related crimes in the region.
