No Mandatory Health Insurance for Visitors Yet – Health Minister Clarifies

The Ghana Ministry of Health has issued a statement clarifying that the mandatory health insurance policy for non-resident visitors is still a proposal and has not been approved by the cabinet. This follows earlier reports that foreign nationals would have to purchase a compulsory health insurance policy before entering Ghana, starting from July 1st, 2024.

According to the Health Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, the proposal aims to ensure that foreign nationals have access to healthcare during their stay in Ghana. However, the proposal has not yet been discussed or approved by the cabinet.

The Ministry of Health has urged the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting that the policy has been finalized. The Health Minister’s statement read, “We assure the public that any policy and its implementation shall be thoroughly scrutinized and taken through all necessary protocols to establish its benefits for the people of Ghana before being settled on.”

This clarification comes after reports emerged that foreign nationals would have to pay between $45 and $270 for the compulsory health insurance policy before being admitted into Ghana. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) had proposed the policy, but it is yet to be approved by the cabinet.

The Health Minister’s statement has put to rest speculation and misinformation surrounding the mandatory health insurance policy for non-resident visitors. The public has been assured that any policy implementation will be thoroughly scrutinized to ensure its benefits for the people of Ghana.
