Renowned singer Mariah Carey is grieving the tragic loss of both her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, who passed away on the same day over the weekend.
In a statement released on Monday, Carey shared her heartbreak: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” she said. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” Carey noted that she felt fortunate to have spent time with her mother just before her passing and requested privacy during this challenging time.
Patricia Carey, 87, was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent. In her 2020 memoir, *The Meaning of Mariah Carey*, Mariah reflected on their complicated relationship, describing it as a source of “so much pain and confusion.” Despite the difficulties, Mariah expressed enduring love for her mother, dedicating the memoir with the words, “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah Carey’s sister, Alison, 63, had been receiving hospice care before her death. Specific details about the cause of death have not been disclosed. The relationship between Mariah and Alison was marked by complexities, including a legal dispute in which Alison sued Mariah for $1.2 million, claiming emotional distress caused by content in the memoir.
The Carey family has experienced significant loss over the years, including the death of Mariah’s father, Alfred, in 2002. Despite these personal challenges, Mariah Carey remains a leading figure in the music industry, known for her holiday hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and a record 19 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles.
As the Carey family navigates this period of grief, Mariah Carey’s request for privacy reflects the personal nature of their loss amid her public life.
