PDP Urges Tinubu To Stop Borrowing, Redeem Legacy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, calling on him to use the remaining two years of his tenure to redeem his image and prioritise the well-being of Nigerians. The opposition party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of reckless borrowing, widespread corruption, and worsening insecurity.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday in commemoration of the Eid-el-Kabir festival, the PDP urged the president to stop what it described as “profligacy, exploitation, deceit and manipulations” that have pushed the nation deeper into hardship.

“The APC administration must immediately end the mortgaging of our nation through reckless borrowing that cannot be tied to any corresponding life-enhancing project or programme in the country,” the PDP stated.

Signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party’s press release described the current state of the country as alarming, with millions of citizens grappling with hunger, insecurity and inflation.

“Our Party is deeply disturbed by the pervading sense of gloom in the country; the worsening insecurity where our nation has become a large killing field with citizens left at the mercies of terrorists, bandits and marauders,” the statement read.

It further condemned the economic policies of the Tinubu government, alleging that over ₦30 trillion had been siphoned through fraudulent deals, especially within the oil sector and government agencies. The party demanded a full recovery of looted funds.

“Instead, the APC government must take immediate step to recover the over N30 trillion reportedly stolen by known APC leaders through various fraudulent oil deals and other funds frittered from government agencies under the APC administration,” it added.

The PDP insisted that these recovered funds should be used to provide critical infrastructure, boost the economy, and improve the operational capacity of Nigeria’s security agencies.

Criticising the government’s lack of accountability, the PDP also warned that continued borrowing without transparency would burden future generations with debt and underdevelopment.

According to the party, Tinubu has a unique opportunity to change the course of his administration and show leadership that prioritises public interest over personal or party gains.

“Our party therefore urges President Tinubu to use the remaining two years of his administration to redeem his image as a leader by being more sensitive towards the wellbeing of Nigerians,” the statement continued.

While extending Eid-el-Kabir greetings to Nigerians, the PDP called for resilience, patriotism, and unity among citizens, even amid adversity.

“The PDP charges Nigerians not to give up hope but remain patriotic, continue to share with one another at this trying time and pray constantly for God’s divine intervention in the affairs of the nation.”

The message ends with a direct challenge to President Tinubu: act in accordance with the values of selflessness, justice and submission to God’s will — virtues the Eid celebration is meant to instil.
